Instagram changed its profile grid from squares to taller rectangles in 2025, and that changed which sizes work best. This page lists every size that matters right now, what gets cropped, and what to upload instead. It was last checked in October 2026.
The short answer
For photos posted from the Instagram app, upload at 1080 × 1440 pixels (3:4). It fills the most space in the feed and matches the profile grid exactly, so nothing is cut off anywhere. If you post through a scheduling app that doesn’t accept 3:4, use 1080 × 1350 (4:5) and keep important details away from the very top and bottom.
Feed post sizes
| Format | Size in pixels | Shape | On the profile grid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall portrait | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 | Shown in full |
| Portrait | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | A thin strip trimmed from the sides |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Left and right edges cut off |
| Landscape | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | Most of the sides cut off |
Instagram shows photos at 1080 pixels wide. Bigger files are scaled down, and smaller ones are scaled up and can look soft, so 1080 wide is the size to aim for.
The profile grid
Every post on your profile now shows as a 3:4 thumbnail, three across. Whatever shape you upload, the profile shows the middle 3:4 part of it. That’s why grid posts and banners cut for the old square grid look broken: each tile loses its edges and the picture no longer meets at the seams. The Instagram grid maker cuts tiles at 3:4 so they line up.
After posting, you can change which part of a post shows on your profile with the Adjust preview option in the post’s menu. For grids, leave it centered.
Carousels
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Slide size | 1080 × 1440 (3:4), 1080 × 1350 (4:5) or 1080 × 1080 (1:1) |
| Most slides | 20 |
| Shape rule | The first slide sets the shape for all of them |
| On the profile grid | Only the first slide, cropped to 3:4 |
For a seamless panorama that flows across slides, every slide must be exactly the same size. The carousel splitter handles that for you.
Reels and stories
| Format | Size in pixels | Shape | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reels | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | The profile grid shows the middle 3:4 part |
| Stories | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Keep text clear of the top and bottom, where buttons sit |
| Profile photo | 320 × 320 or larger | 1:1 | Shown as a circle, so keep the subject centered |
Because the profile only shows the middle of a Reel, put titles and faces in the center of your cover. To make several Reels play as one moving picture on your profile, use the Reel grid maker.
Banners
A banner is three posts in one row. For Instagram, that’s three 1080 × 1440 tiles, or one image of 3,240 × 1,440 pixels before it’s split. The Instagram banner maker cuts it and tells you which tile to post first.
TikTok sizes
| Format | Size in pixels | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Video and photo posts | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
| Profile grid thumbnail | The middle part of each post, about 3:4 | About 3:4 |
TikTok doesn’t publish its exact thumbnail shape, so check your own profile after posting. The TikTok banner maker makes three full-size posts with your banner placed in the part the profile shows.
Where these sizes come from
The 3:4 photo size comes from Instagram’s own announcement in May 2025, and the switch to a taller profile grid was rolled out in January 2025 and confirmed by Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri. Instagram hasn’t published an exact ratio for profile thumbnails, so the 3:4 figure is based on how the grid crops posts in practice. That’s also why our tools let us change every size in one place if the platforms change again.

File tips
- Use JPG for photos. High-quality JPG keeps files small without visible loss. PNG is better for designs with sharp text or flat colour.
- Stick to sRGB colour. Other colour profiles can look dull or shifted after Instagram converts them.
- Keep the same size in a series. Grids, banners and carousels only line up when every piece is exactly the same size.
