How to make a seamless Instagram carousel

A seamless carousel, also called a panorama carousel, is one wide image cut into slides that line up exactly. As people swipe, the picture moves across the screen as if it were one long photo. It’s one of the easiest ways to make a post feel bigger than a single frame.

    1. Pick a wide photo or design Panoramas, group shots, product lineups and wide illustrations work well. For three slides, aim for an image about three times as wide as it is tall.
    2. Choose the number of slides Use the plus and minus buttons. Instagram allows up to 20 slides, but three to five is easier to follow and keeps each slide sharp.
    3. Pick a slide shape 3:4 tall (1080 × 1440) fills the most screen and matches the profile grid. 4:5 (1080 × 1350) is the safe choice if you post through a scheduling app. 1:1 square is there for older layouts.
    4. Position the image Drag and zoom until the cuts fall in good places. Avoid putting a face or a word right on a cut line.
    5. Download and post as one carousel Add slide-01 to slide-xx to a single post in number order. When Instagram asks how to crop, choose the original shape so nothing is trimmed.

Why every slide has to be the same size

Instagram uses the first slide to decide the shape of the whole carousel. If one slide is a different size, it gets cropped or padded with bars, and the seam between slides stops lining up. This tool exports every slide at exactly the same width and height, so the edges meet pixel for pixel.

The width matters as much as the shape. Each slide is 1080 pixels wide, which is the width Instagram displays. If slides are wider or narrower, Instagram resizes them and the join between two slides drifts by a few pixels, which shows up as a visible step in lines and horizons.

The first slide is your cover

On your profile grid, a carousel shows only its first slide, cropped to the taller 3:4 shape. That makes slide 1 the thumbnail people judge before they tap. Put something interesting on it, keep its main subject near the middle, and consider a short line of text that tells people to swipe.

The last slide matters too. People who swipe all the way through are your most interested viewers, so it’s a good place for a call to action, a product link in your caption or a question that invites a comment.

Tips for carousels that keep people swiping

    • Leave a hint at the edge. Let part of the subject cross into the next slide. A shape cut off at the right edge is a natural reason to swipe.
    • Don’t overdo the slide count. A 20-slide panorama looks impressive in the editor, but each slide gets very little of the original image and the story drags.
    • Use a big enough image. For full quality, the source should be about 1080 pixels wide per slide. The tool warns you when a slide would be enlarged.
    • Check text on a phone. Words that cross a seam are fine while swiping, but someone who stops between slides sees half a word.
    • Write one caption that ties it together. Slides can’t have their own captions, so describe the whole story in the post text.

    Carousel or profile grid?

A carousel lives inside one post and tells a story through swiping. A profile grid spreads one image across several separate posts so it shows as a big picture on your profile. If you want something that people see in their feed and can swipe through, use the carousel. If you want your profile page itself to look like one design, use the grid maker. For a single strip across the top of your profile, the Instagram banner maker is the quickest option.

    How we test this tool

Three carousel slides exported by the carousel splitter
Three slides from a real export, each exactly 1080 × 1440 px. The gaps are only here to show where one file ends and the next begins. Swiped in Instagram, they join into one picture.

We check that every slide in an export has exactly the same width and height, and that each one is 1080 pixels wide. Then we compare the edge pixels of neighbouring slides to make sure a line or horizon that crosses from one slide to the next lines up. The 20-slide limit and the first-slide rule come from how Instagram’s carousel uploader works today. Our full process is on the how we test and write page.

    Questions people ask

How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?

Up to 20 photos or videos in one post. This tool lets you cut between 2 and 20 slides.

What size should carousel slides be?

1080 × 1440 (3:4) fills the most space and matches the profile grid. 1080 × 1350 (4:5) works everywhere, including scheduling apps. Every slide in one carousel must be the same size.

Why does my panorama look broken when I swipe?

Usually because the slides were different sizes or weren’t exactly 1080 pixels wide, so Instagram resized them. Cut them again here and upload them in number order without cropping.

Is the carousel splitter free and private?

Yes. There’s no sign-up or watermark, and your image is cut in your browser. It never leaves your device.

Can I add a video slide to the carousel?

Yes, Instagram lets you mix photos and videos in one carousel. Make the video the same shape as your slides so it doesn’t get cropped.
